Who knew a waffle maker could be so fun? Well let me tell you, it’s the hottest new kitchen appliance. Well, maybe it’s not new, but it is hot.
My youngest granddaughter recently got married. She had a picture of our whole family taken at the wedding – all of our kids, our grandkids and our great grandkids. We have a large family with 7 kids, 18 grandkids, and over 30 great grandkids. When I saw the picture, I bragged about it to Grandpa. I told him, “Look what we made!” You know what he told me? He said, “Oh you sex maniac bragging about the big mess you caused.” Can you believe him? The nerve of that man. He comes up with the darndeset things. I give him a pass because he’s closing in on 92.
Regardless of what Grandpa says, I still make him breakfast every morning. This french toast recipe is of course, “the best [he] ever had.” I do have to admit, it might be the best I’ve ever had too. And it’s so easy to whip up.
Stewed Apple French Toast
2 apples, peeled and cored
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp brandy
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
ticture of choice, optional
- French Toast
1/4 cup applesauce*
1/2 cup half n half
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
4 slices of bread
powdered sugar for serving
Let’s Get Started
- Start by making the apples. Slice the apples and place them in a pot with the butter, sugar, brandy, and cinnamon. Cook on medium high for about 15 minutes, or until the apples soften.
- If you are not using store bought apple sauce, remove the apples and puree one scoop to make 1/4 cup applesauce.
- Add tincture of choice to the puree, or store bought applesauce. Mix well.
- To make the waffles, start by preheating your Waffleye Waffle Maker.
- In a shallow dish, whisk together applesauce, half n half, eggs, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Lightly grease your Waffleye Waffle Maker.
- Dip one slice of bread at a time in the egg mixture. Do not soak, or the bread will get too soggy and wont cook properly.
- Place in center of waffle maker and cook until it is done. If you try and open the waffle maker too soon, it will stick.
- Repeat with remaining bread.
- Serve warm and sprinkle with powdered sugar and top with the stewed apples.
- *you can use one scoop of stewed apples, pureed, in place of store bought apple sauce.
